How to Prep for Headshots

Did you know most people haven’t had a professional headshot before? So don’t worry about being a little nervous, it’s normal. Usually taking the proper steps to prepare helps with the pre-shoot jitters.

Even if you’re not nervous, preparing helps create the best impression possible. The whole point of a headshot is to show who you are and express to the viewer who you want them to see. You have control of that. Here are the things you can do to be prepared:

The day before

Yes, prep starts the day before. The energy you bring into the shoot is the energy you show in the photos.

Treat yourself. Whatever self-care means to you, whether that’s ice cream and video games or a really nice home-cooked meal, do what makes you happy.

Rest well. Heading to sleep early or at least at an appropriate time will give you the energy you need. Your patience while being asked to pose and move will be really helpful so a good night’s sleep will help you from being easily irritated. No one likes being told what to do but trust the process and let us help you look your best.

Good morning

It’s the morning of your headshot. You could either roll out of bed and go straight to the shoot location, OR you would give yourself some last-minute TLC. What do you do to feel your best in the morning? Groom a little, put on your favourite outfit, really relax and enjoy your morning brew without the stress of running to make it on time. Give yourself the time you need to make yourself feel good.

Now I know what you’re going to say, ”You don’t need to say it.”. But trust me, sometimes I do, so don’t be offended. For people with facial hair, whether you like the scruffy look or like your beard lined up, now is a great time to get rid of some of those wild hairs.

Feel your best

When you look your best, you feel your best. And when you feel your best, it TRULY translates well in your headshots. I know it feels redundant, but sometimes we all need a reminder to take care of ourselves. Especially in this society of “Hustle” and “work till you drop”.

Covid-19 prep

During this Panini? This Pandora? You know, the friendly neighbourhood Rona. We have a couple of precautions.

Masks. If we are indoors, we ask that the mask stay on until you’re ready for photos. If you have makeup on, we don’t mind taking an extra couple of minutes to apply your lipstick. It’s not like the photographer is gonna run off on you. Take your time.

Sanitize. There might be a chair or stool you’ll be asked to sit in. Please be sure to sanitize your hands before and after taking a seat, we want to make sure you don’t accidentally get sick. Let’s be as safe as possible.

Get the most out of it!

We know photoshoot can be a little intimidating to people that don’t love getting pictures of themselves, but don’t fret! It’s all about being yourself and letting that come through in the photo. We want to make sure you feel great, look great and seem confident. The best way to do that is to really treat yourself the best you can.
